Copenhagen

Copenhagen, København, kʰøpm̩ˈhɑwˀn, is the capital and most populous city of Denmark. As of 1 January 2020, the city had a population of 794,128 with 632,340 in Copenhagen Municipality, 104,305 in Frederiksberg Municipality, 42,989 in Tårnby Municipality, and 14,494 in Dragør Municipality. It forms the core of the wider urban area of Copenhagen (population 1,330,993) and the Copenhagen metropolitan area (population 2,057,142). Copenhagen is situated on the eastern coast of the island of Zealand; another portion of the city is located on Amager, and it is separated from Malmö, Sweden, by the strait of Øresund. The Øresund Bridge connects the two cities by rail and road.

Originally a Viking fishing village established in the 10th century in the vicinity of what is now Gammel Strand, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. Beginning in the 17th century, it consolidated its position as a regional centre of power with its institutions, defences, and armed forces. During the Renaissance the city served as the de facto capital being the seat of government of the Kalmar Union, governing the entire present day Nordic region in a personal union with Sweden and Norway ruled by the Danish monarch serving as the head of state.

The prime minister of Denmark (Danish: Danmarks statsminister, Faroese: Forsætisráðharri, Greenlandic: Naalagaaffiup Siulittaasuunera) is the head of government in the Kingdom of Denmark comprising the three constituent countries: Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Before the creation of the modern office, the kingdom did not initially have a head of government separate from its head of state, namely the monarch, in whom the executive authority was vested. The Constitution of 1849 established a constitutional monarchy by limiting the powers of the monarch and creating the office of premierminister. The inaugural holder of the office was Adam Wilhelm Moltke.

The prime minister presides over a cabinet that is formally appointed by the monarch. In practice, the appointment of the prime minister is determined by his or her support in the Folketing (the National Parliament). Since the beginning of the 20th century, no single party has held a majority in the Folketing so the prime minister must head a coalition of political parties, as well as his or her own party. Additionally, only four coalition governments since World War II have enjoyed a majority in the Folketing, so the coalitions (and the prime minister) must also gain loose support from other minor parties.

Danmarks Premierminister (dansk: Danmarks statsminister, færøsk: Forsæt Councilharri, grønlandsk: Naalagaaffiup Siulittaasuunera) er regeringschef i Kongeriget Danmark, der består af de tre lande, der består: Danmark, Grønland og Færøerne. Før oprettelsen af det moderne kontor havde riget oprindeligt ikke et regeringschef, der var adskilt fra dets statsoverhoved, nemlig monarken, i hvilken den udøvende myndighed var tildelt. Mette Frederiksen

Mette Frederiksen, born 19 November 1977 is a Danish politician who has been Prime Minister of Denmark since June 2019 and Leader of the Social Democrats since June 2015. The second woman to hold either office, she is also the youngest prime minister in Danish history.

Besides a very brief career as a trade unionist (2000–2001), Frederiksen has never had any employment outside politics. She was first elected to the Folketing in the 2001 general election, representing Copenhagen County. After the Social Democrats won the 2011 general election, she was appointed Minister of Employment by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. She was promoted to Minister of Justice in 2014. After the Social Democrats' narrow defeat in the 2015 general election, Thorning-Schmidt stood down and Frederiksen won the subsequent leadership election to replace her, becoming Leader of the Opposition.

Danske amerikanere (dansk: Dansk-amerikanere) er amerikanere, der har forfædres rødder, der stammer helt eller delvist fra Danmark. Der er cirka 1.300.000 amerikanere af dansk oprindelse eller herkomst.

Den første dansker, der vides at være ankommet til Nordamerika, var præsten Rasmus Jensen, en præst for Danmarks kirke (evangelisk-luthersk). Han var kapellan ombord på en ekspedition til den nye verden bestilt af kong Christian 4. af Danmark i 1619. Ekspeditionen bestod af to små danske skibe Enhiørningen og Lamprenen med 64 sømænd, der var danskere, nordmænd, svensker og tyskere.

Fanget af navigatoren og opdagelsesrejsende, Jens Munk, søgte skibene efter nordvestpassagen. Efter at have sejlet ind i Frobisher Bay og Ungava Bay, passerede Munk til sidst gennem Hudson-strædet og nåede Digges Island (ved den nordlige spids af Quebec) den 20. august. De satte derefter ud over bugten mod sydvest. I begyndelsen af september havde de endnu ikke fundet en passage. Festen ankom til Hudson Bay den 7. september og landede ved mundingen af Churchill River og bosatte sig ved det, der nu er Churchill, Manitoba.

Danish Americans (Danish: Dansk-amerikanere) are Americans who have ancestral roots originated fully or partially from Denmark. There are approximately 1,300,000 Americans of Danish origin or descent.

The first Dane known to have arrived in North America was The Reverend Rasmus Jensen, a priest of the Church of Denmark (Evangelical-Lutheran). He was the chaplain aboard an expedition to the New World commissioned by King Christian IV of Denmark in 1619. The expedition was made up of two small Danish ships Enhiørningen and Lamprenen, with 64 sailors who were Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, and Germans.

Captained by the navigator and explorer, Jens Munk, the ships were searching for the Northwest Passage. After sailing into Frobisher Bay and Ungava Bay, Munk eventually passed through Hudson Strait and reached Digges Island (at the northern tip of Quebec) on August 20. They then set out across the Bay towards the southwest. By early September, they had not yet found a passage. The party arrived in Hudson Bay on September 7, landed at the mouth of Churchill River, settling at what is now Churchill, Manitoba.
